1999 collaborative high performance computing (HPC) initiative among University of Cape Town (UCT) scientists
development into informal consortium of Western Cape institutions
2001 Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (DACST) recognises potential of HPC on a national level, making it part of the national ICT Roadmap project
2003 Department of Science and Technology (DST) invites the CSIR into the fold
2004 DST appoints interim advisory committee
first international workshop involving science councils, higher education institutions, government departments, major national projects, industry players, vendors and international HPC centres
2005 the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) is established at the Meraka Institute, a national research centre managed by the CSIR
formal agreement between the CSIR and UCT for hosting of the primary node of the CHPC
2006 start of procurement process for computational platform
third international HPC workshop
construction work to upgrade facilities for the CHPC in Rosebank, Cape Town
2007 computational platform installed
first three flagship projects commence
CHPC inauguration by the Minister of Science and Technology
